How Do I Select the Right Heating/Cooling System?

Selecting the best heating and cooling system for your home should depend on the region in the country where you live, the limits of your budget, and the age of your home. You can select from units that operate on gas, oil, or electricity and even boilers and heat pumps.

Now that it is time to replace your heating and cooling system, making the right decision might not be an easy one. There are various factors to consider about a heating and air-conditioning system other than selecting one that is the most energy-efficient. Your decision should also be based on how well it works in your home and whether it will produce heat using electricity or natural gas.

As one of the largest investments in your residence, a well-maintained heating and air-conditioning unit can keep the air in your home comfortable year-round. To decide the best HVAC system, you will need to consider certain factors that include:

    • Climate – If you live in a warm climate, you can consider purchasing an air conditioner that also has a heat pump, which might save money on the cost of the unit and its operation year-round.
    • Budget – Sometimes, a higher priced unit that cost more up front will actually save you money in the long run by operating on less energy, which can reduce your utility bills.
    • The Age of the Home – How old your home is might determine the efficiency of the unit you purchase. Older homes tend to be less energy-efficient due to reduced insulation, gaps in windows and doors, along with an inefficient duct system.

Gas and Oil

You can select a sealed combustion unit that uses oxygen from the outside air to burn the fuel inside the unit. This helps to increase its energy efficiency, while reducing any possibility of producing noxious combustible gases inside the home.

Boilers

Boilers use a series of baseboards, radiators, and pipes as a way to exchange heat in a home. A boiler has no fan to circulate air, so it tends to make the air comfort level a bit stuffier. Boilers are used to generate warmth for radiant floor heating units, which pushes heat through carpeting, tile, wood flooring, and stone floors.

Heat Pumps

Recent advancements in technology make heat pumps extremely energy-efficient. Heat pumps are often a great solution for residential locations were gas is unavailable.

Electric Resistance

Wall heaters, radiant heaters, space heaters, and furnaces that run on electricity generate their warmth through electric resistance. Using this process is often more expensive than using gas, a heat pump, or oil.

With the cost of a typical heating and cooling system running $3000-$6000 and more, it is essential to select the best one for your home. Your decision might require a reputable expert to help you evaluate all of your options.
