Why Isn’t My Furnace Working?

You rely on your heating system to keep you warm during Midwest winters. But what happens when it stops working? This often makes people panic. Here are some reasons why your furnace might not be working like it should.

#1: Debris buildup.

Did you know that it is very common for furnaces to breakdown because of substantial dust and dirt buildup on the machine or the air filters? Forgetting to clean or replace your furnace filters causes mechanical malfunctions that can be avoided. In some cases, it can cause the whole system to break. Not to mention, air filters that are clogged with debris and dirt block smooth air flow, causing the system to work harder. That means it is not running efficiently, and the system is put under unnecessary strain. We recommend changing your one-inch filters every 1-2 months. For four-inch media filters, our advice is to change them every 3-6 months.

#2: Problems with the gas line.

If you have a gas furnace, there can sometimes be issues with getting the proper amount of gas through the line. If this is the case, a natural gas specialist should check and diagnose this issue. Natural gas is extremely dangerous to work with and the machine should be totally turned off. A professional technician should be the only one to access your system if you suspect a problem with the gas.

#3: Faulty internal components.

No machine can last forever, unfortunately. So, over time, internal components of your furnace will undergo regular wear and tear. Belts, motors, and bearings in the furnace can break – especially if you do not stay on top of preventative maintenance. One of the most common things that break is the blower motor. Without that functioning, warm air won’t be able to flow through your home.
